The laboratory

Based on a sample of wood or charcoal, the 3 axes of the woody plane are observed with a binocular magnifier (magnification x45) and a metallographic microscope (magnification x1000) in order to collect the anatomical characteristics specific to each family, genus and species. The surfaces are sanded with a fine grain (x1500) or refreshed with a razor blade. Around forty anatomical elements are analyzed in comparison with bibliographic and webographic databases and a xylotheque composed of reference wood samples. The photographs are taken with a high-resolution digital camera.

Each expert assessment is the subject of a detailed report mentioning all the observations made on the 3 axes as well as photographs of the anatomical elements.
